Steel substructures – known as jackets – are among the most safety-critical structures in the offshore industry. Regular inspection of welds, nodes, members and cathodic protection is not just good practice; it is a requirement within integrity management. How the inspection is actually carried out, and which ROV class is used, is a decision with greater consequences than many assume. This article takes a closer look at the trade-offs behind that method choice.

What a Jacket Inspection Actually Involves

Inspecting a substructure is primarily about documenting structural condition and corrosion protection. The most common tasks are:

  • GVI (General Visual Inspection) – an overall visual review to detect visible damage, marine growth or anomalies.
  • CVI (Close Visual Inspection) – close-range visual inspection of selected points, typically welds and nodes.
  • CP survey (cathodic protection) – potential measurements to verify that anodes and corrosion protection are working.

 

Newer approaches supplement this with photogrammetry for 3D modelling, and field gradient methods that map CP condition without physical contact. What these tasks have in common is that, at their core, they are about observing and measuring – not about intervening in the structure.
